Introduction

"...only once before have I ever entered the Battle Room on the infamous man-made techno-moon Illuminus ZT05 from which the Lunar Government concentrates its central intelligence feed from all its roaming pods into a seamless 1,048,576:1 scale universe projected via stem-cell holographs. Zooming out from that very point you can see you looking at the hidden Illuminus Moon ZT05 behind the Inner Circle of the five large red and metal governmental planets all brimming with military cluster-ships and seed-clone armies.  You can see the strength of this firepower centering around the third planet, Cicilli 13, upon which the green and metallic Section 51 sprawls like a cancer that is spreading to the nearby Merchant Systems infested with trade ships, smugglers, Moriati, and slaves to the invisible currency of the universe.  These trade routes move from here out like a cobweb into the residential systems buzzing with media pods and with congested starways, as wealthy personal starships roar past limping beggar ships.  Twinkling slowly out when imploded to make space for bigger starways are are the Resource Rocks that begin to dot the outer systems in the wilder parts of space and border the vast unknown area beyond the Lunar Government's clutching fingers where the Exiles float in majestic emptiness..."

The agents of the Lunar Government have infiltrated every level of life within the vast and diverse inter-galactic techno-society that is the Far World, while the undercurrents of crime networks and corruption, drugs and prostitution, and the ever-present Web shift powers in the favor of the many factions breaking away from this rigid central power.

Science and economic theory sway the thoughts of the leaders, while media-pods hypnotize the masses with universe-wide broadcasts to all five senses laced with governmental subliminal programming.  Despite this, some claim to have heard or seen echoes in Deep Web that prophecy old gods awakening after eons of slumber, the emergence of a new order of man, and the collapse of the Lunar Government after the secrets of the experiments completed at Section 51 in the Sanctum Labs were broadcast on MyMegaSpace.uni.

The basics of Dr. Starke's Theory of Transportation have now been recreated in various hidden corners of the universe on planets that have sufficient gravitational pull to contain the Philip Force and its directional gravitation field created.  There are rumors of some Alternate Reality Entities--F.A.E's--that have been brought through the portals alive and how they have brought strange alien technologies with them, which--in one unconfirmed report was shown on a rouge media-pod--actually destroyed an entire planet when activated.

And through all of this the Lunar Government fights rebellions with such brutal force that the seeds of changes spread far and wide in a world perpetually connected to every corner of the galaxy and laced with as much data as mysteries.

Brief History of the Universe

For all scientific advancement of man, no one has been able to explain their origins.  As far back as modern records in the Laser Libraries upon the Media Ring Planets go--which are limited to those days after man learnt how to store data in light-fractured crystals--there are rumors of a planet called Earth.  Man was born on this planet from another race of lesser beings, whom he enslaved and later destroyed entirely, and began to evolve his understanding of science and technology.

From this humble beginning he first took the step beyond his galaxy and then began to spread throughout the stars.  At around this time the beta version of the Web was downloaded into the machine with the greatest computing power ever created--the human collective consciousness--and began to stream data in real time through the data-megaway.

This tale then tells of a sudden and great calamity: before man's understanding of eViruses was advanced enough to handle it the first Virus swept the Web and killed men and bio-starships alike--which are also connected to the Web through their organic Conduits--in a matter of moments.  Apparently the fragment of the beta Web that survived this virus retreated into the darkest reaches of the collective consciousness to heal its code and make backups of its Coresys.exe.  This was the origins of the Deep Web that many believe directs the present Web from the shadows.  It is unsure whether this is just propaganda spread by the Deep Web--whose existence is no longer in dispute having been confirmed by itself--itself in order to strengthen political position, but it must also be noted that most of what Far Worlders' know about their origins comes from texts written by the Deep Web.

Another effect of this epic virus was that the planet Earth was lost by the scattered survivors in the swirling masses of space.  There is a legend that speaks about one who will find it again and unlock the origins of that first Virus, but most believe this to be only fairytales by info-drunk Web-junkies and deep runners after gorging themselves on Deep Web feed.

Whether or not the above tale is true, the origins of the Lunar Government did arise in the needs of a nomadic space-going human race that wanted to gain the benefits of free trade and security of numbers against the natural forces of disaster and each other.  Most of the stories about the origins of the Lunar Government and how all other upstarts and rivals were eliminated have been conveniently erased from the archives or happened before the current records begin: back then it was code named the Expansion Project.

At that stage in mankind's history the collection of inhabited planets that were spread through a couple of small galaxies were running out of resources and the numbers of humans were growing exponentially, thus the Lunar Government decided upon a grand plan of inter-galactic expansion that they--blandly--termed the Expansion Project.

Thousands of fully functional first-generation brood ships--an evolution of the old bio-starships--defended by a collection of early cluster-ships were dispatched in promising directions and given coordinates of potential galaxies that had been noted by the collective intelligence of the Web.  Many of these ran down, suffered accidents, or simply vanished...but enough made the trip that the effective size of human colonization of the universe was quadrupled in the matter of a couple of decades.

Suddenly the Lunar Government was in possession of a strategy and a collection of valuable resources and it used these to both entrench its control of the human race and to expand even further into the cosmos.  Some have questioned why no equally--or more--intelligent races have been encountered by the expansion of man into space, but the trute answer is because part of the Lunar Government's expansion was to eliminate all "potentially" intelligent life-forms once encountered that were not "vital resources" before they could pose a threat to man and to the government's rule.  This, though, is not common knowledge.

There are rumors that some of these intelligent races have survived the Government's brutal policy and hide on the fringes of known space liaising with the Exiles.

For good or bad mankind had expanded, destroyed, and assimilated into the vast, cold, and strange universe before him taking over full galaxies with his machines and changing the face of space.  Technology advanced: starships improved, deep space starship-jumping was perfected, sub-nuclear drives pushed men further faster, cybernetic enhancements and genetic engineering take men nearer to immortality and the gods, Web links connect the far reaches of the universe through mental tunnels of pure data, and lacing the tale through all space is the subliminal wisdom propagated by the Deep Web called the Theory of Transportation.

Factions

In the Far World there are too many factions to be individually named, as the size, technology, and spread of the universe is such that no one can effectively control it all and many pockets collect on websites that become larger than their originators.  The Lunar Government, based on the man-made techno-moon, Illuminus ZT05, would fervently disagree by pointing out the sway they have over most aspects in life and the media based lock they have on public information through their network of media-pods.

In a world were the "top secret" experiment in the Sanctum Labs was published on MyMegaSpace.uni within minutes of the Pendragon Battlecruiser being pulled through the portal created, very few things are kept as quiet as the Government would like.  The Web is the great leveler with the power to direct the masses that are constantly in contact with it through their implants.  Unfortunately or fortunately no single faction has been able to wrestle control of the Web from...well, that's the question everyone has been wondering for centuries: who does control the Web...?

Contemporary political philosophers propose that the Web is actually the new political system (beyond even democracy or, perhaps, a perfection of democracy) that they have come to refer to as a "data democracy", as almost everyone has access to almost everything in a way whereby information becomes larger than those that create or input it and, thus, unlike the present day Lunar Government democracy the data cannot be bribed and/or corrupted.

Besides the Lunar Government and their authoritarian control of the human race there are various other notable factions.

The Anarchists--a large part are part of and known as recallPeter after the movie on the Web that gave the movement a cohesive form and a catchy slogan--are a recent movement that oppose everything to do with central control.  The creed of the movement is simply: "freedom".  Although a large proportion of the members are low-income--or no-income--there are a few wealthier members that support its modest financial needs.  The real strength of this movement is also their biggest weakness: as they are against central control, they tend to be extremely badly organized and all have differing objectives.  The lack of goal congruence leads to thousands of small acts of terrorism and sabotage against the Lunar Government that are collectively impressive, but that might be better directed and have more effect if actually centrally coordinated...of course that would go against the Anarchists' philosophy.  Some factions of the Anarchists even sabotage--sometimes fatally--other factions of their movement in the belief that they are simply pawns of the Government that they are attempting to oppose.  There are rumors of an Inner Circle of the Anarchists that is attempting to bring the movement to a violent head, but--if there really is such a body--then their efforts are obviously failing.  In the richer families it has become fashionable for the rebellious children to claim alliance to the Anarchists, but few of them actually act on this and most just use it as an excuse to party or slum in the Klub Zero Planets.

Some brood ships in the initial Expansion Project and subsequent Expansion Projects slipped out of the iron net of the Lunar Government and realized that they liked the autonomy this granted them.  Some of the starships that were initially thought to be lost in the Expansion Projects are counted among this strange factions ranks, as they resurfaced amidst the collection of ships that grew beyond the Government's borders.  The Government, once it realized what was happening, tried to hunt down these "defectors", but eventually realized that the costs and distances involved stretched them too thin against other raiders and internal problems, thus they discarded Program Exiles--note the subtle propaganda--and officially declared them outside of the human race.  This might not be too far from reality because the Exiles--as they have come to be known--have now spent many centuries in space and their bodies have evolved elongated limbs with equestrienne features that are perfectly suited to the zero-gravity environments that exist on their organic power-saving starships.  Little is known about the Exiled, their huge warped brood ships, advanced alien technologies, and their motives...but a few believe them to be the next step in human evolution beyond the prison of planets and gravity and the "true" step out into the spaces beyond.  There are even more disturbing rumors that they are still connected to the Web--some even say that they are the Deep Web--but, true or false, no conclusive evidence has ever been found.

One other faction worth mention is the Moriati, an ancient crime network run by a circle of ruthless families that deals in everything from blackmail, drugs, gambling and prostitution to banned data-streams, rogue cybernetics, eViruses, and illegal genetic programming.  According to their version of their beginnings they are descended from an ancient order of merchants that existed on Earth and managed to bribe its way into the first wave of starships that left the dying planet.  According to the Lunar Government the Moriati do not exist...albeit, for something that does not exist, the Government is doing a tremendous amount of work to try to eliminate them or find a truce.  This is easier said than done, though, as the Moriati have their corrupt fingers in at every level and have dirt on almost anyone.  It is rumored that they have legions of hackers working around the clock with their sole purpose to attack all secure networks worth attacking and packet-sniff all downloads moving along the data-megaway.  Little more can be said of this secretive--but powerful--faction, as it seems that their only motive is wealth and power and they are ruthless and brutal in the pursuit of this.

Background & Creed

A brief version of the origins of the Lunar Government has been told above and will not be repeated here.

The Lunar Government was built by the power-hungry council of political leaders that formed the older United Brood-ships (BU) as an official vehicle for their own agenda.  The Government is supposedly built upon democracy, freedom of speech, the greater good of society, and the advancement of man, but these were--and still are--simply political nuances for the real agenda of those in control: to remain in control.  When it comes down to it, the Lunar Government and the Moriati share very similar motives.

The BU managed to unite the people under them during the Dark Ages after the first Virus and then seized the moment with the ingenious push of the Expansion Project.  Although the public was led to believe that the Expansion Project was to discover much needed planetary resources (and this really was one of its objectives), the highest ranking Government officials had other agendas that they were pursuing.  They used the opportunity to rid themselves of potential rivals and upstarts by declaring the brood ships to take the journeys to be selected from the populace at large by a "random" lottery.  Needless to say, the brood ships heading to the most distant galaxies and the most risky routes were filled with "high security risks", as the Government calls any rival to its rule.

Although this did help to enforce the Government's control it also led subtly to the formation of the Exiles--and was the original reason why the Government was so keen to eliminate or at least forget them.  The greatest effect of the Expansion Project was the expansion of the human race throughout the known galaxy from the Mud Pits of Kvazek to the lattice world of Quistence to the ocean-planet of Es-Sea among the--literally--billions of other planets all connected by intricate trade routes and cryogenic sleep-cell jump ships...and soon, maybe, Passage networks...

Man now truly lives amidst the stars...and where ever he goes, so does the Web.

Political Figures & Landmarks

The bureaucracy of the Lunar Government is astonishing in its complexity and structure, as everyone is constantly checking each other in a permanent state of paranoia and a dance of distrust called "internal controls".  Even the Presidential Families at the top are suspicious of each other and their spies abound in each others ranks, as subterfuge and assassination filter through the entire system creating a deadly balance of inter-galactic power that teeters on the verge of a monarchy or of a civil war.

Every seven years there is an universe-wide poll to elect a new inter-galactic president.  The vote is handled by the Web via its SSSL--Sophisticated Secure Socket Layers--channels and the results instantaneously released upon the same day as the vote was cast.  There are always rumors of the votes being rigged, but the Government always dismisses this as the Anarchists "trolling" the public forums just attempting to undermine the path of "...freedom and democracy".

Note that "trolling" of public forums has officially been declared illegal, despite the declaration of freedom of speech.  The justification is that it is consuming valuable public bandwidth while inciting dangerous activities that are contra bones mores (again public good). It is also worth noting that all of the presidents in history originate from or have very strong ties to the Presidential Families; many having had their campaigns sponsored by one or more of the Families.

The most recent electorate to take the seat of the President of the Lunar Government is the thin, wispy, and hawk-like Frederick Oliver Giovanni.  He won the vote by a narrow margin from the other electorate after the third electorate was tragically killed in a logistical accident onboard a starship docking with a planet for a rally.  Frederick Oliver Giovanni lost his daughter in the accident--she was a supporter of the other electorate--and, thus, got the sympathy vote that he needed to clinch the victory.  That was two year ago and, since then, President Giovanni has simply sought to consolidate his power and all the Presidential Families backing him power through any means.

President Giovanni rules from the Inner Planets, which are a line of heavily defended military planets that have close proximity to the Media Planets from which the President often makes public announcements.  Upon the Inner Planets are the infamous Sanctum Laboratories in which the Passage was opened in Laboratory Section 51 by Dr. Starke. Another important planet is the man-made techno-moon Illuminus ZT05 upon which the heart of the militaristic bureaucracy of the Lunar Government sits and the President spends a the majority of his time pouring over the miniature holographic replica of the universe produced from the Web-driven feed of the zillions of info-bots and media-pods of the Government that scout the known world.

Spreading outwards the universe is mapped in clusters of galaxies with each galaxy governed by a central planet that--almost always--is entirely covered by man-made infrastructure in the form of planalopolis or "planet city".

Some important galaxies are the Mercantius Galaxum--better known as the Merchant Planets--where the financial hub of the Lunar Government's machine grinds through decade long planetary shift cycles powered by the Wealth.uni and SmallCaps.co.za independent engines.  Hidden amongst these planets and dotted within their gigantic cities lurk the vast and murderous Moriati pedaling all-forms of contraband, assassination, carnal pleasures, and--even--slavery.  This galaxies is the unofficial headquarters of the universes crime and, despite the effort of those few good souls in the Government, little appears to have been done about it.

Dotted throughout the universe and found on the fringes of Governmental space are the Resource Rocks--as all planets whose strategic purpose has officially been declared less valuable than their planetary net value, so they are slowly been mined out, stripped of any and all resources, and then imploded to make space for inter-stellar highways otherwise called starways.  There are rumors that some of these planets are illegally being stripped by the Moriati, that some of them are being stripped by the cheap slave force of the Moriati on behalf of the Lunar Government, and that some are being stripped by slaves bought by the Lunar Government from the Moriati.  None of these has been officially confirmed--partly due to the Lunar Government's official stance that the Moriati do not exist--but what truly does exist are Prison Planets where criminals of the worst kind or political enemies too powerful to kill outright are dropped and forced in harsh conditions to mine the minerals that build the rest of civilization.  For unknown reasons a number of the most outlying Prison Planets have increasingly raided by Exiles killing all the guards and kidnapping all the prisoners.  Little is known of their true intentions for these attacks, but the Lunar Government has cited possible experiments and torture as the probable reasons.

Recent Developments

This leads to the recent developments in the Lunar Government's bureaucracy and the civilized world.

When the large Lunar Government battleship the Pendragon Battlecruiser was dragged through the portal into the parallel universe now dubbed the "Realms of Wonder" because of the explosion of raw and uncontained Philip Force into space its--supposedly--secure military channel real-time log was running relaying its visuals to the Illuminus ZT05.  Unfortunately, the obvious success of the experiment to confirm the Theory of Transportation was captured and its signal intercepted by an unknown entity.  Within moments of the chaos that ensued the loss of the Pendragon and the vanishing of Section 51 a video capturing the evidence had been uploaded on MyMegaSpace.uni and viewed by trillions of individuals across the universe.

In a universe that spans literally billions of light-years where even its leaders could not travel its expanse without loosing hundreds of slow-time years in cryogenic freeze the ability to control logistics is the ultimate tool to control the physical environment of man: if you can send enough men or machines to any point faster than anyone else, then you can control that point.  The Theory of Transportation surfaced a number of years ago on the Web in a cryptic message relayed from the Deep Web scripts and it gave so-what-obscure instructions on the base-concepts of how to construct a device that side-steps space to appear anywhere instantaneously.  The disappearance of the planet sized Pendragon seems to prove the Theory correct and every single power-hungry being and organization in the entire universe turned its greedy eyes to the Sanctum Laboratories and Section 51.  Within this age all the scattered rebels against the Government's bureaucracy in even the most remote planets and star systems have begun smell the demise of the once immortal social machine and bigger and more violent rebellions are on the rise as the Rebel Factions begin to loosely align in an attempt to assassinate the old corrupt empire.

And civil war on a inter-stellar wide level has begun to rumble through the blog spaces and rogue media channels on the Web.

Most noteworthy of the recent developments has been the direct assault on Section 51 by a Moriati slave military force right under the nose of the Government.  The siege was brief, as the Lunar Government panicked--partly due to the proximity of the attack and partly because of the speed of it, as if their enemies had been waiting just beyond the deep space scans--and set off its first barrage of sub-nuclear defense war-heads that wiped out the slave military attack and a large number of defending Governmental military cluster-ships.  The Government declared the battle a "...supreme victory against unidentified rebel forces...", but in reality it left their Inner Planets lacking a significant portion of its military force and questioning their security in the event of a large and more organized attack.  An even greater effect of the S-51 Battle--as the media dubs the fight--was that it showed how the immortal Lunar Government social machine can bleed.

It is rumored that the Moriati are building an even larger slave and mercenary force within the Merchant Planets system--and the Government has accordingly lost most of its communication with this system, which also puts it on an economic back foot.  Various other rebel forces have begun to band together under the leadership of a couple of ex-military and political convicts.

Even the Exiles have begun to raid deeper and harder into the Lunar Government's fringe systems both destroying and abducting whole planets.  Some even say that the Exiles have forged alliances with certain rebel factions and whole defected planets and systems.  There are more disturbing rumors of planet-born men now serving within their ranks and guiding them around Lunar Government defenses.

The Lunar Government did not come into power and stay there for well over thirty centuries just to roll over and play dead: the Government has spent the last thirty centuries digging its military roots deep, fortifying its heart, and it is still the only one with (official) control of the Passage...albeit with Dr. Starke dead/missing the question whether they know how to use it must be asked..?  The wheels of bureaucracy turn slowly, but the gigantic war-machine of the Government's military is recovering and regrouping to eradicate all rebels on an inter-stellar level.  Martial law has been declared in many systems, but even in many others the military is executing any and all that threaten it...rumors speak of whole planet being phisler-nuked from cloaked deep space missile launchers.

The Lunar Government might be falling, but it's death throes could well destroy everything surrounding it.

Rebel Factions: Myriad of Anarchy

Background & Notes

Spread throughout the Far World in isolated pockets on planets and solar systems and dotted through Web forums and encoded networking sites gather literally billions of people disgruntled with the Lunar Government, power-seeking individuals, crime rings and syndicates, cults and techno-religious circles, and those with even darker intentions.  The Rebel Factions, as the Lunar Government collectively refers to them, do no form any cohesive unit other than their basic disregard for the law and contempt for the Government.

The Far World is simply too big to be properly regulated and controlled by any central body, thus the far flung fringe planets tend to be short-changed in respect of police and soldiers; the Lunar Government would rather spend their visible man-power on the wealthier inner systems and on protecting the roads that their decision makers walk.  On these planets true rebel factions are born and grow strong...and even sometimes take over whole planets and systems.

A noteworthy example of this was on the Philser System--where the philser drives that power most starships were first tested.  The planets used to be a basic testing ground for military technologies and the fallout from one particularly large detonation was blown by solar winds into a planet that the Government had declared a Resource Rock and were in the process of stripping it with the use of criminal hard labor.  Although the fallout killed most of the people on the planet, it had a strange side effect on those that were deep enough underground to be shielded from the worst of it yet exposed to enough of it: namely, 23.019 miles below the surface and surrounded by exposed ored of the rare mineral K-156--an isotope of uranium that has been exposed to high pressure and heat.

After the planet was left for dead and the Lunar Government's damage control teams had declared it uninhabitable the Red 21-156--as they have come to call themselves--began to emerge from the depths of the mines.  The level of radiation that the Red 21-156 had been exposed to has left them with a number of strange mutations, among the least of them was the fact that they all glowed an eerie red in the dark.  It is also rumored that the wave of radiation have excited their brainwaves and its interface with their Conduits so as leave them with perpetual insomnia, heightened intelligence, the ability to partially-Passage or communicate with the Transportation Theory, but not actually physically travel...and many forms of madness.  There are various theories as to the reasons for their "mutations", but none have gotten close enough to them and lived for any real study to be credible.

After being declared dead by the Lunar Government the Red 21-156 took over the discarded starships and military equipment on the planet and set about a small coupe in the system.  Their mode of attack was one of sophisticated Web-based manipulation: first they set up a cult/political site with parts of their tale, spoke about prophecies that their "government inflicted" condition had revealed to them from a Red Lady in a Realm of Wonder, and used a careful craft of religious zeal, moral higher ground, subtle subliminal messaging, Moomle Ads, and scientific theories to grow their following.  And then they commanded a rebellion on their adjacent planets coupled with an assault from the skies with their discarded military power.

The Red 21-156 are one of many cults that are growing in power as the Lunar Government harasses and alienates planets and people, and as the opening of the Passage--the name that the media have now called the experiment--show them how reality is a lot larger than the ones in power wish them to believe.  The hacking of some of the Azazrael Archives aggravates this public sentiment.

Many factions are the physical manifestations of websites or parts of websites that exist on the Web.  In Far World lexicon this is referred to as "Social Backloading" or the effect that the Web has on the slow-world.  Some websites are so old that they even predate the capturing of data on light-fractured crystals.

One website that has spawned many faction and has its origins in the Deep Web wrapped up in the mists of legend is MyMegaSpace.uni.  Millions of sub-domains are registered through this site daily and each and every one has the potential to create a gathering throughout the Far World.  Indeed an anonymous man--possibly called Peter--used MyMegaSpace.uni to automatically upload a video clip from his retina-implanted Webcam showing clearly Lunar Government troops torturing him to get information over some trivial smuggling route of medical supplies to a Resource Rock on the fringe systems.  The clip was entitled "recallPeter.mov" and was the key ingredient to the many Anarchist's coming together in some form of a cohesive group to opposed the Lunar Government.

Another example of the informational dispersing power of MyMegaSpace.uni is the hacking and uploading of the Pendragon Battlecruiser visual stream that clearly shows the opening of the Passage before signal and the starship vanish.  This single video has changed the universe more than any other that has come before and many and most factions all have many references to this single video on their homepages.

Recent Developments

The Red 21-156 have consolidated their power within the couple of outlying solar systems they control and appear to be one of the few that are content to not rally towards capture of the Passage's technology.  There are rumors that this is because they are working with the Exiles to build their own one based on Deep Web theories and in the form of a strange pyramid structure that their "Red Lady" has communicated.  Other rumors speak about how they have managed to bring some F.A.E. into the Far World.

Other factions are not so patient.

The recallPeter Anarchists have stepped up their sabotage to terrorism and--possibly contradictory to what they are fighting for--in some wilder groups within this faction innocents have become just as valid targets for bombs, eViruses, kidnapping, and anything else...so long as the Government suffers in the end.  To the casual observer lots of the attacks may appear random--indeed many are--but the Lunar Government's upper-levels in Illuminus ZT05 have been alerted to a statistical macro-pattern that appears to be forming across attacks.  Many of the attacks are starting to bear the trade mark of Moriati orchestrated assassinations and are slowly circling in on the higher governing officials.  Some officials have disappeared, been given up for dead, and then appeared months later with no memories of who they are or where they are: the hallmarks of an organic hack, which is a disturbing thought for those in charge and those carrying secrets that they wish to remain secret.  It is worth noting that many of those kidnapped had access to details about Section 51 and the Passage.

Every person has a bit of the Web--and its intricate strings of code--within them, floating in their organic algorithms and connecting them to every single other person alive through the data-megaway that is the protocol whereby emails are sent, data is downloaded from the backbone of Near and Deep Web, and private and public WANS connect, surface websites float, and surfers skim through the kaleidoscope of data-streams.

There are many legends about how the Web actually formed and whether or not it was made by man or simply evolved in the same manner as our self-awareness is thought to have.  The most probable and most widely accepted legend about the origins of the Web is that it was a man-made software program that lived within specific machines built to house it.  Through data-evolution it grew in awareness until it could improve itself--this process is officially called wikilution for some reason.  Part of this improvement was the natural desire for a more suitable habitat better able to handle its expanding needs; the obvious choice of habitat was the human collective consciousness, which is still the greatest processor in existence.  The human mind is an organic computer far beyond any man has ever made and the collective power of a network the size of mankind is nearly infinite...and growing every second.  Not only the vast computing power and unlimited storage space, but the fact that the exponential growth of mankind simply increases the Web's habitat's power and extends its reach. It is unknown how the process began, but the Web slowly uploaded itself into the human collective consciousness and began to reside there.  It might be that the Web was the one to design the Conduit device that is fitted to each human child at birth to connect it to the data-megaway or it might be that man did this to connect mankind's thoughts and the Web saw it as an opportunity...

So--however it happened--the beta Web was birthed into a symbiotic relationship with mankind just as he was growing into the depths of the mostly unexplored universe...and then calamity struck: a Virus unlike any ever encountered before entered the universal protocol that flows through the data-megaway and entered the minds all connected to the Web.  At this stage--as it is now--that was the entirety of the human race.  There are many myths and legends concerning the origin of this mythical Virus--some point to the Lunar Government, despite it not even existing for the next thousand years--but none that are conclusive enough to be told here.

Although its origins are unknown, the effect of the first Virus is very well known: billions and billions dropped dead within light-minutes, organic starships imploded, critical website crashed, surfers were disconnected from their bodies to never been seen again (deep runners speak of encountering "ghosts" of these people in the Deep Web...), and even the heavily encrypted media channels crashed down with corrupted signals and the loss of critical computing mass in the data-megaway.  So much was lost in that tragic moment that the survivors were effectively severed from the world that came before: besides the lives that were lost memories, literature, movies, and art, thousands of years of wisdom, knowledge, and science, history and planets...all vanished in the moment that the beta Web collapsed.

But...some of the human race did survive on isolated star systems and planets where the data-megaway was too weak to transmit after enough of the nearer inner systems collapsed, thus giving these fragments of the Web time to erect a hasty, but effective firewall to block the--now--weak Virus' signal.  It is said that this is the origin of the mysterious Deep Web: after the Virus the Web realized how fragile it was and built a secure core for itself deep within mankind's collective consciousness (or somewhere...) and, similar to a backup, it still sits there directing the present form of the Web.  From this protected and secluded core the Web also collected all the fragments of the beta Web that existed as backups and that it could scavenge from galactic echoes of transmissions and is still running a program to connect them all together and recreate humankinds history.

While Deep Web often echoes its messages in the Protocol Router, this method is inefficient and its most common method of communication via small code files it attaches to a select few surfers that venture far into the data-megaway and make it past the protocols there to reach the "real" or Near Web.  This is the Web that exists presently and that most websites are loaded up on and data stored, but it should be distinguished from Deep Web, which has never actually been located or seen (even Red*69 does not claim to have seen the Deep Web).  These small code files often take the form of cryptic message concerning events that are to happen or technologies that are yet to be invented.  One such text file was brought back by the deep runner that calls him/herself Red*69 and held the basis for the construction of the Passage within its strange code-like words.

Use and Prevalence of the Web

The symbiotic relationship that the Web and the human race share is indisputable: the Web provides man with instantaneous data dissemination, aggregation, interrogation, communication, and the effective reduction in space through remote access and management of distant connected objects, while the human race provides the Web with an immense and growing organic computer to live and run within and store all its data.  It is worth noting that the human race acts as data-capturer for the Web, while the Web acts as data-retriever for the human race.

It is a plain and simple fact that at this stage, neither could live without the other and maintain the level of existence that they have become accustomed to.

Whereas the use that the Web has for mankind is unclear, the use and prevalence of the Web in human society is easily noted.  The Web is used in basically every facet of human life; from communication to work to play to living and dying.

A number of developments during the last thousand years have not changed the use of the Web, but merely augmented what it is capable of.  Email is now sent from the server in one persons mind to that of another's.  Thus, eViruses can actually kill and spam has become a crime in the same category of slander.  Websites are dynamic and 3-dimensional and not "flat text"; website now allow people to surf then in and out with their eBodies, and not just up and down, while many websites are actually managed by hyper-intelligent Artificial Intelligence (AI) software programs.  The entire universe is mapped out with Web coordinates and messages can be left in virtual space to activate when a person--particular or random--exists within the same Web:World (W:W) coordinates.  Beyond its governmental uses, flagging--as it is called--is often used by secret factions to communicate in the most secure of modes by having a private digital announcement board that can only be access by stepping on a certain tile or sticking your hand within a certain hole etc.

All financial wealth takes the form of base credits or virtual cash that is stored in the Conduit of the person having rights to it and are heavily encrypted in mental wallets.  Still...hack-theft does happen when short-range viral attacks are made directly on the wireless portion of the Conduit to disable its firewalls and enter its backdoor. Thus Conduit banks do exist were in significant sums of credits are stored in artificial Conduits implanted into organic matter that are linked via secured dial-ups with the clients own master Conduit.  Many of these brain banks--as they are commonly referred to--lie within the vaults of the main Merchant Planets and are rumored to be guarded with by technologies that even the Government is unaware exists.

Truly, the Web is the world in the Far World: it exists in every facet of every day in every way and brings even the most remote physical corners of existence together.

Legends of the Web

There are many legends of the Web that have not been told above.  In fact, there are far too many to repeat here.  But some websites are worth mentioning, as their roles in society have become so ingrained that they are synonymous with certain aspects of Far World life.

The origins of this website were lost with the crash of the beta Web, but MyMegaSpace.uni was given life again by Deep Web recycle vaults within a matter of years of its disappearance.   That was over three thousand years ago and since then--as an ownerless space--it has become the largest collective networking site that tracks social progression of the human race.  Mothers religiously register their babies names before they are born on this site, as many regard the name, look, and content of their MyMegaSpace.uni to be akin to their digital home.  Countless cults and factions have formed, grown, and disappeared within the confines of MyMegaSpace.uni, as even the Lunar Government has registered its own name and hosts it own page here.  There are rumors that many--including the Lunar Government--have tried to hack into the database of this site, but none have succeeded and many of these have lost their lives to the firewalls and proxy-demons that stalk the Deep Web catacombs where the data-warehouse lies.  If anyone were to succeed then the wealth of social information that would be at their fingertips would surpass even the Government's records captured from its spider/info/media drones/pods sent out to monitor the human races comings and goings.

All the data on the Web would not help anyone if they were unable to locate what they wanted quickly and easily.  Into the frame comes the galactic search engine and pro-active data miner called Moomle.uni.  This site, which is also a script that runs independently on many Conduits, is based upon an earlier model search engine with a long history.  The aspect that distinguishes Moomle is its ability to surface search Conduits' host's minds to help augment search results with aspects of knowledge that don't actually formally exist yet.  Some surfers religious Moomle search and document the results because they view it as scientific exploration through this strange organic algorithm of Mind-Mental Searching via the "logic shuffle" AI.  There has always been concern over infringement of personal information, but the organic algorithm appears to be easily blocked by firewalls and has the innate ability to distinguish between "personal" memories--as they are more "tightly" gripped by Conduit firewalls--and "knowledge & experience" memories--as they are more "loosely" held.  Another aspect of the search engine that has been added beyond those that came before is its ability to search based on image input, sounds inputs, smells and even tastes, as well as the classic text searching.  This of course means that a surfer can now see someone or hear them speaking, search with this information, and then come up with a quick profile on someone or something...all within seconds of meeting them.  In an age of information and inter-connectivity through an inter-galactic world there are few secrets hidden from those wishing to delve deep enough.

At the heart of the Merchant Planets' financial network lies the unobtrusively named website SmallCaps.co.za and it's financial cousin Wealth.uni.  The former was begun nearly two thousand years ago by an independent venture capitalist and investors, Keith McLachlan, as a modest financial blog but grew with his fortunes and numerous acquisitions into a mega-networking financial site through which most of the worlds capital flows everyday on markets, inter-stellar bank accounts, funds, and numerous other financial instruments and systems.  The related Wealth.uni is a cousin site created by Keith McLachlan as a secondary portal for much of this financial traffic.  Both are collectively called the "e-Konomy" after their founders habit of signing everything with a "K".  As the financial power of the e-Konomy and their related founder grew the began to become a competitor with the Lunar Government of the day, which attempted to wrestle legal power over the valuable Web real estate from Keith McLachlan.  Few--if any--know what happened, but the rumors persist that Keith McLachlan actually met face-to-face with Deep Web and/or the Exiles and struck a deal whereby it/they would take and keep control of this vital financial network and in return it/they would protect him from the Government's obviously unfriendly intentions.  Whatever really happened, Keith McLachlan vanished from history and the data-base and control panel over this network shifted into the Deep Web.  Perhaps this was the best choice, as the existence of a neutral party reviewing and guaranteeing the reliability and integrity of each and every transaction through the e-Konomy has added immeasurably to its appeal and was one of the critical aspects cited by the Council of Merchants in deciding to adopt this as their official financial platform.

Amongst the billions of websites on the Web there are a number of noteworthy other websites which have contributed to society in significant ways:

  • Consumerism has provided a powerful platform of corporate standards and commercial change via a free forum upon which anonymous opinions and recommendations about companies and products can be aired.

  • Spacebook.uni has evolved as a partner site to MyMegaSpace.uni into a secondary networking site.

  • Wikipedia.org has been a legacy project adopted by the Deep Web in an attempt to orchestrate an organic human collective wisdom whereby all knowledge known to man is collected, connected, and shared free of charge.

  • Torrential.hdn has become the largest illegal mind-to-mind sharer of digital information, hacking forums, and black listed code.  Truly, if you have enough money or savvy you can buy or find anything on this immense Moriati meeting ground.

Echoes in Deep Web

What is the Deep Web?  Where is the Deep Web?  Who is the Deep Web?  What are the motives of the Deep Web?

These are questions that man has been wrestling with since the phenomenon was first noted by the primitive deep runners of the post-Virus world during ventures into the little understood Protocol Router. Many of them noted regular code appearing on the Protocol Router that took the form of echoes in the main code...almost like something was making a sound from far away.  Some of them also returned with small code packages attached to their meta-body.  Eventually the strange code was broken down into primitive binary and translated as an actual linguistic communication with the regularity of the echoes actually being short messages concerning various seemingly random (but logically written) texts.

At this stage many viewed this oddity as a stray unregistered A.I. program entering the Fischer State and the strangely worded messages were viewed as "fortune cookies" by fringe philosophers...that was until they foretold the Java Killings (which were copycat killing after the Cryogenic Murders came to light on public forums) exactly thirteen days before the first one was found.  When eventually the serial killer was caught and executed publicly many turned to the library of old Deep Web messages and began to notice a strong correlation between what they spoke about and what actually happened.  There was just enough of a coincidence between enough of these messages and events that happened subsequent to their release that the Far World would never be the same again and the tayles began...

All of the words of the Deep Web have been compiled into a (number of) dynamic webpage(s)--e.g. www.deepweb.uni--that is often quoted by cult leaders and faction leaders, socialites and forumites, and powerful webmasters and politician alike.

Whatever the truth of the Deep Web is, the Web and the human race's destinies are intertwined in a symbiotic relationship that blurs into the past and gleams into the uncertain future.

The Passage: Dr. Damian Starke

His-story

Dr. Damian Starke is among the leading Lunar Government scientists engaged in advance Web research.  During this research he became interested in the Deep Web texts collected by deep runners and--like many before him--began to see more in them that just Fischer State A.I. ramblings.

For years Dr. Starke had been working on Project Teleportation based in Section 51, which the Government had been trying to come up with and manufacture a means of instantaneous transportation, commonly referred to "teleportation" based on Temporary Wormhole Theory.  Thus when Dr. Starke came across the Deep Web code fragment indexed as "Theory of Transportation" the simple but evocative words sent his brilliant mind down a path that would eventually lead to the Passage, the Collision of Two Worlds...and his own disappearance.
