Archive: A0057: Sounds in the Signals

This case did not originate from any official channels nor any channels that I am aware of, rather it stems from a link that appeared one morning on my desktop to an old case investigated by a Ron Cohen around 300 years ago.

Agent Ron Cohen was, apparently, an anti-hacking agent working on a number of unrelated hacking cases involving such names Red*69, Diabol, whiteRabbit, and the Minx Transactions List when he stumbled across a strange phenomenon. While analysis secured Governmental data streams looking for the trace signs of hacker entry into the system he noted that certain packages where carrying too much data. On closer inspection he found that the packages had actually had strangely encrypted files free-riding upon them.

It should be noted here that I ran a background check on Agent Ron Cohen and it resulted in the surprising absence of any information: per birth records he was not born and I can find no record of him ever working for the Bureau--despite the existence of this file with his data-megaway DNA tag attached.

The trail was two way in that he could trace the one side to the point where it feeds into the Protocol Router of the Deep Web and the other side he managed to triangulate towards a portion of the Sleeper System and, with statistical inaccuracies, he managed to estimate that it was originating in a portion of space where no planets were listed in the Galactic Map Records of the time, no starships were logged to have been within 1000 light years anytime around the signals, and--basically--no known man-made source could be identified.

At this point in the file the rest of the data has become corrupted through light re-fractation. This process does occasionally occur after a few thousand years of cold storage of a case, but with this case being only 300 years old the corruption of the data arouses my suspicion of either some outside influence or an inside action.

Luckily I managed to restore a small portion of the attached files that Agent Ron Cohen had originally placed within the case. They took the form of unencrypted sound files (obviously Ron Cohen found some way of decoding the files free-riding in the secure Governmental signals) that once played provide an orchestra of high-pitched clicking sounds.

My first instincts was that this was still the encrypted file, but all attempts to decrypt the sound files into something legible have failed. So, upon impulse, I ran the files through a Bureau Expert Linguistically-minded AI and the results were startling: with 87% certainty the sounds in the files are a conversation between two unidentified entities. With 45% certainty the one entity is superior in the conversation to the other, i.e. like orders were be said. And with 0.001% accuracy the beings having the conversation are not of human organic origin. I have tried running higher level Expert Linguistically-minded AI's, but they all either return basically the same results or enter a terminal loop and must be formatted from the system before they enter advanced Fischer State.

There are many unsubstantiated reports of Deep Runners encountering Exiles with the Deep Web, amongst other beings, and--maybe--this has led to a fringe belief that the Deep Web is contained in or IS the Exiles. Furthermore, there have been isolated claims of witnessing or being party to Exiles within the Lunar Government "civilized" space, be it the Inner Systems or the Sleeper System. Some even believe that the Exiles actually run the Lunar Government, but this claim appears to be contradicted by the aggressive actions of the Government against the Exiles infringement on their space. Others believe that the Exiles have infiltrated the Government through various unknown means are attempting to take control.

What leads into this discussion of Exiles is that their language has been reported--by those few that have met and survived an encounter with them--to consist of lots of high-pitched clicks, whistling, and even humming. Further more, when utilizing Moomle's organic search algorithm to surface scan the collective consciousness it--amongst even more strange results--returns articles and encounters with Exiles and discussions of the above theories that I have described above.

Whatever and whoever sent the signals (which appear to no longer exist or have moved to another medium) and why they sent them and what they say in them is still unclear and I believe will remain that way due to the strange reluctance of the Bureau to allocate resources to further investigate what could be a very important case.
